Based on traffic accident data along Santiago Canyon Road and field evaluations by traffic engineering experts, OC Public Works has been working on a series of various safety measures to enhance the safety for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and others.
In August 2020, OC Public Works will start construction activities for the Santiago Canyon Road Safety Improvements Project, which includes various roadway measures designed to improve safety for road users, enhance driver awareness and reduce the likelihood of vehicular accidents.

Changeable message signs featuring safety information and reminders
Solar-powered permanent speed feedback signs to alert drivers of their speed

Upcoming Safety Improvements: August 2020 – June 2021
Safety measures being implemented include:
Install high-friction road surface treatment
Upgrading roadway caution signs (curve ahead, no passing and others)
Upgrading guardrails and reflectors
Enhancing bike lane buffer area
Installing rumble strips along the center of the road
Continue coordination between OC Public Works and law enforcement
