Santiago Canyon Road

Based on traffic accident data along Santiago Canyon Road and field evaluations by traffic engineering experts, OC Public Works will be implementing a series of various safety measures to enhance the safety for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and others.


Completed Safety Improvements

Phase 1:

  • Changeable message signs featuring safety information and reminders
  • Temporary speed feedback signs to alert drivers of their speed
  • Solar-powered permanent speed feedback signs
  • Review traffic conditions of the Santiago / Chapman and Jamboree intersection with the City of Orange

Upcoming Safety Improvements

Phase 2:

  • Install:
    • Install high-friction road surface treatment
    • Curve warning signs
    • Delineators and flashing beacons
    • Bike lane buffers
    • Conduct public outreach/education about safety along Santiago Canyon Road
    • Continue coordination between OC Public Works and law enforcement
  • 2018: Maintenance Project  - Pavement Rehabilitation
  • 2019:
    • High Friction Surface Treatment
    • Flashing Beacons
    • Delineators & Reflectors
    • Buffer Zone for Bicyclists

Phase 3:

  • Passing Lane Project (MPAH Amendment)

Anticipated Phase 3 schedule:

  • 2019: Pre-Design
  • 2020: Final design, utility coordination and environmental clearances
  • 2021 / 2022: Procurement of materials and resources and permitting
  • 2023 / 2024: Construction of improvements
